We all know how fun long car rides can be, at least we try as hard as possible to make them actually enjoyable. Sometimes it works, and the car ride is way more fun than the rest of the trip, but sometimes car rides are just long. This is especially true for any college student heading home for the holidays. The days last forever, and every mile you drive seems to be an eternity, and if you are like my mom and I, a four hour trip ends up being closer to ten hours by the time you are actually to your destination.
My mom loves to make random stops on the way to anywhere we go, especially if the stores we pass are a little more exciting than Smith's or Walmart. She particularly likes Deseret Industries, and if you haven't heard of that one, it's probably because they only exist in Utah, and Idaho. There might be one or two in another place, but not many.
Every time she picks me up to take me home from college ( I know it's lame to still have your parents pick you up from school, but when you have no car, you take what you can get,) we stop at every single D.I. along the way. We find some cool stuff, but it definitely makes for a long trip.
She also likes to stop at this store called N.P.S. I don't know what the acronym stands for, but it is a one of a kind place, so it doesn't really matter. If you haven't heard of this one, there is a reason for it. The store is very unique in both product and customers. It's not a bad different, but it is different.
First off pretty much all of the food has been expired for six months or more. It won't kill you if you eat it, I am living proof of that, but most people tend to avoid it. Also if you are white like I am, you will feel rather out of place there, because most people who shop there are not white.
If you want to learn Spanish, Hindi or Tongan, N.P.S is the perfect place to go, because those languages are more common than English there. You have to be very careful about what you purchase, because as I said before everything is expired. You can find anything, and I do mean anything there. My mom loves to get white elephant gifts there, because you can find the most interesting things there.
It makes for quite an adventure, so I don't mind. We have been shopping there for a few years, and it is one of my favorite stops on the way home, because it is far more exciting than any of the D.I. stores along the way. Although I did find my guitar at one of the D.I. stores my first semester in college, and it is my favorite purchase from the D.I.
Sometimes the little stops along the way are exciting, they just make the trip a little longer, but when you are with the people that you love, a little more time with them goes a long way.
