Finals: A Huge Burden In A Small Window

Finals are never anyone's favorite part of the semester. You start out the semester getting used to your schedule, and class load, and all of a sudden finals week had arrived. Sixteen weeks is a small amount of time, but when you are in school they fly by unbelievably fast. The closer they become, the more agonizing it feels.

I think college wouldn't seem as bad if we just did away with them. No one likes them anyway, but unfortunately they do serve a purpose, so finals will probably continue to be a part of college forever. Some of my classes have been fortunate enough to have no final, but most of them have a final.

Whenever finals week hits, it seems like it has been such a short time since the start of the semester, and the window for studying shrunk dramatically. When it comes to finals, I rarely feel totally prepared. Some of them are easier than others, but it still feels like I can't remember any of the things we learned over the semester when I take the test.

There's no way to not worry about finals, unless you are seriously the best test taker in the entire world. It's natural to be a little nervous about taking a test. It actually helps you to do better, because you are more aware, because you are nervous, and let's be real. When you are nervous, you notice pretty much everything.

The best way to conquer the dreaded final is to take them one by one instead of focusing on everything as a whole. Take each test and keep it separate from any others in your mind. It may seem impossible with your finals schedule, but when they are separate in your mind you will be able to have better focus on each final.

Another way is to take study breaks between subjects. Some people think that the more you study, the better off you are, but if you just plow through all of your subjects in one long study session, the knowledge you gain, will be more short term memory, and will probably not help you as much as studying one subjects, and taking a short break in between.

The last thing is to be confident. If you spend all of your time belittling yourself, because you think there is no way you can pass, then you won't. Prepare for success by being confident in your abilities, and not dwelling on how unprepared you feel. Just relax and focus on what you do know, and feel confident in, and build on that.

Finals are scary, but if you prepare for them little by little, they won't be as big of a challenge. The key is to be confident, and prepared. As long as you have that, finals won't be the complete end of the world every semester. If you are struggling with finals, good luck, and "may the odds be ever in your favor."
