When Did Everyone Get So Big?!

Coming home for the holidays is one of the best things after moving away from home. You get to come home, and stay in your old room rent free, and get to eat mom's home cooked meals the whole time you are there. You also get to see relatives and old neighbors, and it seems like they have all grown up a ton since you last saw them.

I used to basically live at my neighbor's house when I was in high school. I was their dog walker and some of their younger children loved to come with me. After walking the dogs I would come back, and usually stayed there until it got dark. I was basically family. I was one of the very few friends that got to stay over when their cousins visited. They had a new baby in the house, and since he was too little to help with the chores, I got to watch him while his mom and older siblings did their chores.

I was there so much that their oldest son would get upset when I would have to leave, because he thought that I actually lived there. He used to block the doors, and cry when I would have to go home, and when my family went to visit them after they moved, he bolted down the stairs to make sure he met me at the front door.

When you aren't around somebody for awhile, it kind of surprises you when you see them again. That's what happens in life. If you are around a person all the time, you don't notice the gradual changes that happen, but when it is an extended amount of time, it is amazing to see just how much they have changed.

I went to a friend's wedding when I was home from college, and was in shock at how much her siblings had grown up. The kids that were once basically underfoot, now tower over me. I don't know how it happened, but it seems to happen every time I come home. I will look at the people in church when I am home, and have to ask my mom who some of the teenagers are, because they grew up so much, since I was last there.

The ones that surprise me most are the boys, because they get so tall. My brother has a friend that visits in the summer, and this last summer I had no idea who he was, When he and my brother first started hanging out they were both about 5''4'. My brother grew a couple of inches over the course of the year, but his friend grew and entire foot. I thought my brother had brought over somebody new because he had grown so much.

It's crazy how fast people change and grow in life. It's not a bad thing, but it's still catches me off guard. People change all the time, and in most cases change is a good thing.
